beat back the blahs soup recipe and cough syrup too…

We have been attacked by the early Fall blah’s, kinda snuffly, kinda sneezy, kinda wheezy, loads of tissues, it sort of sounds like the seven dwarfs right?!

I am feeling fine, which is good, as I am the last hold out, and final line of defense for the fam.  I found a pinned a recipe for a cough syrup mix, that helps relieve congestion and soothe the hacking cough, of course, once I had it in my hot little hands I just had to fiddle with it and adapt it to suit our tastes and my grandma’s age old cold remedy.

I have linked this recipe over at Allergy Free Wednesday, and also at the 31 days to refocus blog, both have great Fall ideas and recipes.  Also over at Vegetarian Mamma, a fun new site to check out!

The original recipe is good, and similar to Grandma’s remedy so I thought I would share it, since it is coming on to cold and flu season.

Spicy Honey Cough Syrup

1/2 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

2 tsp ground cinnamon

2 Tbsp cider vinegar

3 Tbsp water

2 Tbsp honey

Blend all of the ingredients together in a small lidded jar, take 1 tsp as needed through out the day.  This will need to be stirred before you take it, and can be stored in the fridge for extended periods as well.  The flavor will set a fire to your belly and invigorate even the worst head case cold victim:-)

The soup I made a week or so ago, Harvest Pumpkin Soup was really good, but, due to a serious case of the blah’s it needed a bit of zipping up, so here you go.  ** indicates the changes I made to defeat the blah-ishness**

Harvest Soup

1 small pumpkin

1 buttercup squash

1 princess pumpkin

4-5 carrots

2-3 sweet potatoes

4-5 tbsp olive oil

1-2 tsp salt and pepper

2 tsp thyme, divided

**2 tsp ground ginger

2 c chicken broth

**2 tsp cinnamon

**3 tsp fresh grated ginger

1 pint half and half

Roast the pumpkins, squash, sweet potatoes and carrots, tossed with olive oil salt, pepper , 1/2 tsp thyme, ** and ginger**at 350 for 1 hour, or until tender.

In small batches puree the roasted squash, potatoes and carrots together, adding in some broth to help it smooth out.  Pour the puree back into a heavy stock pot, add the rest of the chicken broth, thyme, a pinch of garlic, salt and pepper to taste, **cinnamon and fresh grated ginger to help add some decongesting properties**.   Simmer on low until for 30 minutes, for the flavors to combine.  Pour in the cream and heat gently, serve.
