Do you ever feel that little nudge, the one that prompts you to step out of your comfort zone, step out and put yourself out there on the line? I felt that nudge today, and it was a none too gentle one at that, I really felt compelled to talk to a mom in Little Man’s therapy office, someone I had seen many times before, but never talked to(being naturally shy with strangers and all:-) no really, I am!!
As we talked I mentioned, in passing, that we homeschool, and how much that helps to adapt Little Man’s schedule, and learning to his therapy schedule, and even how he is doing on any given day due to seizure activity, a constant and ever changing schedule it is lately. You would have thought I had just popped her with a cattle prod, she nearly jumped out of her seat, and rapid fire started asking me about homeschool, how, why, what to do, you name it she asked it!! Whew, I actually got a bit tired of talking, but she was so excited, and had so many questions, it was soooo worth it!!
This lady, this very kind grandmother, is working to raise her grandson, and being told by the school she cannot remove him from his current education plan, she is not qualified, she has no plan, the school can handle him better, blah, blah blah. The same school that has not changed his IEP in 3 years, and allows a 11 year old, who cannot read or write more than his own name, to move on to the middle school next year, she can do better than that!!
Being the pro-homeschooler that I am I gave her the website for Homeschool Legal Defense, and my own email, and exactly what she needed to put in her letter of intent, and what the school could, and could not, require of her in our state and area. She was thrilled, overwhelmed, and eager, it was awesome!!
I was really blessed to see how my own love of educating my own kids helped this poor woman to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and find hope in the possibilities for her very sweet, gawky, challenged, kind and goofy young grandson. Giving back is the best, and I feel I just gave hope, and hopefully, hopefully, a better chance at excelling to another young man, amazing!!!
I have to admit, if I did not have the support of my darling Hubby, and a wonderful circle of friends, you know who you are, I would feel incapable and challenged every day, and may not have spoken up, may not have heeded the nudge, but, oh, I am so glad I did! I cannot wait to see where this leads, I am praying this sweet young boy will grow and learn, developing his own special gifts, just as God intended him too!
