Watching the Olympics with the kids has been a truly fun experience. This is the first time they have ever watched them, and my first in (gasp, please don’t hate me!!) a really long time. Explaining the scoring and judging to the girls has been a bit of a challenge, but I am proud to admit they are ethnic snobs, Fancy Miss thinks Sparkles would be a better swimmer, and that Ethiopia needs a good swimmer or diver and she is ready to sign her sister up:-)
It is obvious that the kids do not watch regular TV either, as Fancy Miss has exclaimed more than once “who makes these things up, and are these commercials supposed to convince me to buy these things?! They are not working, I am not convinced!!” Thank goodness for that, marketing people will have to work harder for her money! They also think it is ludicrous that there needs to be so many ads thanking moms for all they do “of course moms are the biggest fans, they are always there. Mommy would do all that too if she had to” was heard last night in response to one such ad, thanks girls, I am your biggest fan, you are Olympian commentators in my mind!!
Fancy loves the gymnasts too, of course, we are blown away by these girls skills, and inspired, but, what makes this momma’s heart swell “I love the sparkly outfits, but they need a little skirt to cover their bums”, ah yes, so glad you noted that, and will wear the sparkly outfit, and create your own sparkly skirt/bum cover too, love that!!!
What commentary has the Olympics brought to your house?
My kids have been too distracted by cousins to really get into it the way I’d like. But I have been appalled by the lack of respect shown by commentators and reporters when talking about other countries and to the athletes. I have lost any respect for NBC and I wish we could watch BBC coverage instead.
